Chartek exist for one thing: beautifully charred timber. They’re a family-owned specialist charring service, not a timber merchant – combining construction, engineering and material science to perfect the shou sugi ban / yakisugi process for New Zealand conditions. Their purpose-built machinery delivers deep, even char at high temperatures, with the consistency architects and builders need.

For Pentarch Forest Products, Chartek are our fire masters. We supply carefully graded Japanese cedar; they apply the traditional yakisugi treatment – from full char “dragon skin” through to refined brushed finishes – ready for factory oiling (With the Natural House Companies oils) and installation.

Natural House Company have spent decades working out how to protect timber without loading it up with harsh chemistry. Their oils and varnishes are based on plant chemistry – tung oils, tree resins, plant waxes and pigments – designed to soak into the timber, keep it breathing and still stand up to real New Zealand conditions.

For Pentarch Forest products, that means we can offer finishing systems that feel honest and understated: exterior oils that weather gracefully, interior finishes that are low odour and family-friendly, and products that are as comfortable on floors and joinery as they are on cladding and decking.
